What is Grafana?

Grafana is a dashboarding and visualization tool released in 2014 by Torkel Ödegaard as a fork of Kibana. It is now AGPL v3 licensed (relicensed from Apache 2.0 in 2021) and pulls data from dozens of sources—Prometheus, InfluxDB, Loki, Tempo, Elasticsearch, PostgreSQL, Datadog, CloudWatch, and more—to render time-series charts, stat panels, tables, and alerts.

The company, Grafana Labs, has grown the product into a full observability suite: Grafana for dashboards, Loki for logs, Tempo for traces, Mimir for long-term metrics storage, Pyroscope for profiles, and a hosted Grafana Cloud offering that bundles them. Even teams running Datadog, New Relic, or Splunk often run a Grafana instance alongside for dashboards over their own data.

Who uses Grafana?

Production Grafana deployments include eBay, Bloomberg, PayPal, Wikimedia, CERN, Raspberry Pi, Salesforce, Digital Ocean, and most engineering orgs that self-host Prometheus. Grafana Cloud has hundreds of thousands of free and paid users. It is one of the most common dashboards in any Kubernetes observability stack.

Grafana users are SREs and platform engineers who build dashboards and alerts, backend engineers who instrument services, data engineers who visualize pipeline metrics, and on-call responders who live in the dashboards during incidents. These personas buy metric stores, log aggregators, APM, incident-management, and on-call tooling.

According to the Grafana README: “Grafana allows you to query, visualize, alert on and understand your metrics no matter where they are stored.” (source)

Frequently asked questions about Grafana

What companies use Grafana?

Grafana is used in production at Booking.com, eBay, Goldman Sachs, Sony, and virtually every company running Prometheus metrics or Loki logs for observability — Grafana is the default visualization layer.

Who maintains Grafana?

Grafana Labs, founded in 2019 by the Grafana OSS maintainers. The core Grafana OSS project is Apache 2.0 licensed. Grafana Labs employs most of the core maintainers and offers Grafana Cloud and Grafana Enterprise.

What are alternatives to Grafana?

Kibana (Elastic stack visualization), Datadog Dashboards (hosted), New Relic (hosted APM), Chronograf (InfluxDB), Perses (OpenTelemetry-native), and Metabase (more BI-focused). Grafana is rarely replaced once adopted due to ecosystem lock-in.

How many developers contribute to Grafana?

Grafana has 2,987 contributors (GitHub, 2026/04). It is one of the more actively contributed open-source projects in its category, with contributions from both individual developers and corporate engineering teams.

Is Grafana production-ready?

Yes. Grafana is production-ready: it has 73.3k GitHub stars, 2,987 contributors (GitHub, 2026/04), and is last released Apr 2026. It is used in production at large-scale organizations and has a mature release cadence.
