What is Supabase?

Supabase is an open-source backend-as-a-service released in 2020 by Paul Copplestone and Ant Wilson. It is Apache 2.0 licensed. The core design choice is that everything is built around Postgres: the database is real Postgres with extensions (not a bespoke engine), the auth service writes users into a Postgres schema, Row Level Security handles authorization, and the Realtime and Storage services are Postgres-aware Go and Elixir services.

The pitch is "Firebase for people who want SQL." Supabase Cloud runs the managed version on AWS, and the full stack can be self-hosted via Docker Compose or a Kubernetes deployment. It became especially popular with AI app developers in 2023–2024 because pgvector ships as a default extension, which made Supabase a fast path to a production-ready RAG backend.

Who uses Supabase?

Public Supabase adopters include Mozilla, Humata, Chatbase, Quivr, Meta (internal projects), 1Password, Replicate, and a large volume of indie SaaS and YC startups. It is especially popular for AI/LLM product backends because of the built-in pgvector support and instant auth/API layer.

Supabase users are full-stack and backend engineers shipping SaaS and AI products, mobile developers who want a Firebase-like SDK with SQL underneath, and solo founders who need auth + database + storage in one service. These personas buy hosted infrastructure, email services, payments, LLM APIs, and monitoring.

According to the Supabase README: “Supabase is the Postgres development platform.” (source)
